Perry began on Thursday with a whirlwind tour of talk shows in the morning and moved to New York, making light of his mistake and try to fight the perception that its series of setbacks discussion makes it unsuitable for the rigors of a presidential campaign.
While many Republicans praised Perry's handling of the situation, most said it was not enough.
Some of Perry's supporters rushed to his defense.
Reaction to the blunder, which took place during a televised debate in the suburbs of Detroit, came a day when the intensity of the GOP presidential race notched considerably less than two months before voting begins states in the early nominations.
