The 20th of November is the date of the general elections in Spain. This has become a big worry for gay couples. Six years ago the Socialist government granted their right to get married. Now, their fear is that the conservative Partido Popular, who are against same sex marriage, may win the elections.The village of Jun, in the province of Granada, became an unusual Las Vegas. Last month couples have been turning up to get married urgently by the local mayor, José Antonio Rodríguez, and those who couldn’t make it in person got married via internet.
The mayor reported that PP-run town halls are delaying marriage applications, he said “Procedures that only need two weeks are taking months”.
Las month, the mayor offered his services via Twitter. “If you know a gay couple who want to get married before 20-N and have problems with their town hall, in Jun I’ll marry them without delay”. He received 56 applications just two weeks after, a huge difference in comparison to 2010, when the municipality only saw 11 same sex weddings.
