Huge Asteroid Swings Close to Earth

An asteroid as big as an aircraft carrier (which contains carbon-based materials and possibly frozen water) passed so close from Earth last Tuesday 8th. It is an important fact because it did not happen for three decades. Its closest approach to Earth was pegged at a distance of 202,000 miles, closer than the distance between the Earth and the Moon. Now, it is traveling crossing the space toward the Sun.

Astronomers were so interesting (and worried) about that because it may be so dangerous if and asteroid of that size hit the Earth: The impact would carve a crater four miles across (6.5 km.) and 1,700 feet deep (518 m.). And if it slammed into the ocean, it would trigger 70-foot-high (21 m.) tsunami wave.

Anyway, observatory director Ron Dantowitz said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to educate the public that there are things out in space that we need to be aware of.”

That is actually why I have chosen this new. I do agree with Ron Dantowitz, because we do not realize that there are a lot of things out of here, in the space. Astronomy is a very interesting subject and we don't care about that. It would help us to know why our planet exists and what and why happened the famous Big Ban. Maybe it would help us to find interesting places in the space. Maybe it would help us to know if we are safe in the Earth. I think it is important for us to know how is it going in the space because we actually could die if an asteroid just like that one hit the Earth. But anyway I think that is too far to become true.

I got the new from this link. New York Times.

Eduardo Bensabat-Prata Silva.
